Breast Augmentation is a surgical procedure, and like any surgery, it comes with potential risks and complications. Some of the possible risks include the following:

A “capsule” is created from scar tissue when your body reacts to the inserted foreign object (i.e. breast implants). While this is usually a good thing to help keep the implant in place and prevent slippage in the breast pocket, there is a possibility for many patients with breast augmentations that the scarred tissue can become a cause for concern if it becomes too hard and closes around the implant. Not only will this create aesthetic problems, but it will also cause tremendous pain in the breasts.

During an open capsulotomy, the plastic surgeon will attempt to cut open the tissue capsule around the breast implant by making small incisions and possibly remove some of the capsule. The goal is for the capsule to pop open, giving the implant more room to move around.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is a rare type of T-cell lymphoma — cancer of the immune system; so while it’s not a breast cancer, it’s a very serious condition that should be looked into immediately. It develops in the capsule of scar tissue that surrounds a breast implant.

While not completely impossible, the risk of infection from fat transfer breast augmentation is considerably lower than traditional breast implants.

Although a serious concern for many women, loss of nipple sensation after breast augmentation surgery is temporary. In most cases, the sensation returns within a few weeks. Permanent loss is a rare complication.

Ultimately, deciding when to get pregnant after breast surgery is up to you. It’s wise to consult with your surgeon before becoming pregnant.

Pregnancy can cause changes to your breasts, so many women wait at least a year after surgery before trying to get pregnant. This gives their body time to heal and recover from any associated side effects.

If you feel that your implant ruptures you should immediately contact your plastic surgeon. A saline implant is a safe implant, and if it ruptures it will likely flatten. The solution isn’t bad for your body but will result in a breast implant revision.

Different plastic surgeons have their own way of performing plastic surgery procedures such as cosmetic breast augmentation. Implant placement beneath the muscle of the chest offers some advantages over placement beneath the breast tissue only.
